I could never understand those athletes who would push through pain to complete a race or competition. As a trainer, I would advise them that tomorrow was another day. And here I was in the middle of a 28km trail run in Charlevoix with no intention to apply the same advice to myself.
My bumped foot decided to rebel at exactly the 21km mark just when I thought everything was going great! As I descended the hill, the discomforting pain immobilized the flexion of my left foot. All my brain could think at that moment was “Not now!!”
Walking is not an option and neither is quitting so let’s work this out together. I need you to help me get to the finish line before a sweeper and you need to rest. So I promise, I will only run the flat and uphills and take it easy on the downs so as not to further agitate you. Work with me and I’ll work with you; together we can make it.
I laughed at myself as I realised how driven I was when I needed to step up and find a solution while collaborating with my foot. Working together is my driving force, it will always propel me to succeed and excel.
That was my discovery on my Utra-trail Harricana adventure and, yeah, I did cross the finish line well ahead of the sweeper ;)
